Our itinerary for the rest of 2017 has finally been confirmed! We will be spending our last month in Costa Rica, from where we will fly back to our home in the San Francisco Bay Area for only $100 (in taxes and fees)!
In the past, we have talked about two key credit cards we use for travel hacking. We have the Chase Sapphire Preferred, and the United Mileage Plus Explorer card. Both of these are great cards and we were able to get AMAZING deals for European travels using the points we earned from these cards. Our latest finding was the Gold Delta Sky Miles credit card, which helped us land the flight that will close out our year abroad.
What we got
Costa Rica has always been highly recommended. What we weren’t sure about, however, was how we would return home from there at an affordable rate. That’s where we looked at our next round of mileage points through our Delta Sky Miles Card and realized we could cover almost our entire flights! And by the way, we only used half the miles we had stored up. While scoring these deals can be exciting, we appreciate how this card goes above and beyond. Here’s a full overview of the benefits we have access to, and so can you.
Benefits of the Gold Delta Sky Miles Card
- Receive 30,000 bonus miles after you make $1,000 in eligible purchases on your new Card within your first 3 months, and a $50 statement credit after you make a Delta purchase with your new Card within your first 3 months. (We used only 15,000 of our miles to get from Costa Rica – SF)
- No annual fee for the first year, after that it’ll be $95
- 1st checked bag FREE
- 2 Miles per every Delta purchase that you make
- 1 mile per every dollar you spend
- Priority boarding
- No foreign transaction fees while traveling (This has saved us many times)
- Discounts on the Delta Sky Mile Club
Why you need this card
This card is ideal if you mostly travel within the USA/Caribbean/Central America. Delta’s airline partnerships are mostly concentrated in those areas, which enables them to offer very competitive deals. So if escaping to the Caribbean sea is on your radar, this could be the perfect card for you!
Another reason for getting this card is that they only require you to spend $1,000 the first three months to earn your bonus miles. Most cards, as you’ve probably noticed in our other posts, require you to spend $3,000 within your first 3 months.
We just looked online to see what else you could score, and roundtrip from SFO – Punta Cana is 35,000 miles! That means that you received 30,000 miles just for getting the card, and then you only need 5,000 more miles to get away. Keep in mind that miles don’t cover flight fees and taxes. You’ll need to pay that out of your own pocket, but it’ll normally turn out to be only $100.
If you like what you learned, give this card a shot. Remember, banks are getting more selective about who they accept so don’t think you’re guaranteed to get it. Regardless, it’s always worth applying as you can save a lot of money on flights alone.
